NEW DELHI: In a high-pitched battle within the Munjal clan, Pawan Munjal of Hero MotoCorp won a crucial interim arbitration order that allows him and his company to use the popular ‘Hero’ brand name and trademark for their electric vehicles.
With this, he scores a victory over his nephew Naveen Munjal, who along with his company Hero Electric had claimed rights over the Hero brand for green vehicles, purportedly on the basis of a family settlement. Naveen had taken his uncle to court over the issue, which had then referred the matter to an arbitration panel comprising former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Dipak Misra, Justice (retd) Indu Malhotra and Justice (retd) Indermeet Kaur.
In their interim order, the panel is understood to have shot down Hero Electric’s claims, which now allows the Pawan Munjal family to use the Hero name for electrics. When contacted, spokespersons for Hero MotoCorp as well as Hero Electric declined to comment on the matter, citing legal requirements. Sources saidHero Electric may now approach Delhi High Court against the interim order.
