NEW DELHI: Full service Vistara emerged as the second biggest airline by domestic market share last month with a 10.4% pie of the sky, distantly second to the market leader IndiGo at 58.8%. The number two, three and four positions saw airlines separated by just decimal points — Air India (8.4%), GoFirst (8.2%) and SpiceJet (8%). AirAsia India (AAIPL) accounted for 4.6% and the remaining for the balance 1.6%, according to DGCA data on domestic air traffic for July 2022.
SpiceJet had the highest occupancy on domestic flights at 84.7% last month, followed by Vistara at 84.3%. Other big airlines had load factors in seventies. In the past few months, the number two slot had kept shuffling between SpiceJet, Go and AI. Over 97 lakh domestic passengers travelled by air in July, 7.6% lower than the 1.05 crore in June, DGCA data shows.
The Tata Group airlines’ (AI, Vistara and AAIPL) combined domestic market share (not accounting for Air India Express that is essentially a regional international airline) was 23.4%. Both the Tatas and IndiGo are preparing major expansion plans under their new airline CEOs Campbell Wilson and Pieter Elbers, respectively, both of who are aviation veterans.
IndiGo will leverage its domestic dominance for medium haul foray to Europe, Far East and CIS states starting mid-2024 when the Airbus A321 XLRs start joining its fleet. The airline, which has a team of proven track record aviation veterans led by promoter Rahul Bhatia, has brought in Elbers for international expansion.
The Tatas, which are running AAIPL and Vistara since 2014 and 2015 respectively, earlier this year acquired AI and AI Express. They are going to place a mega aircraft order for both wide bodies (Airbus A350) and single aisles.
“However unlike IndiGo, Campbell Wilson does not have a second rung of senior management of aviation background veterans at the Tatas. Vistara has been ably led by its CEO Vinod Kannan, a veteran from Singapore Airlines group like Wilson. Unless the merger of AI and Vistara is quickly decided so that Kannan can join Wilson in the revival effort for AI — seen as the most challenging attempted contemporary airline turnaround globally — Wilson will first need to create his own A team of aviation pros,” said a senior official of a leading foreign airline.
