Railways lost Rs 1,462cr freight revenue due to agitations - Times of India

NEW DELHI: The railways suffered Rs 1,462 crore loss in terms of freight revenue during this year due to various agitations and strikes including dharnas at platforms near railway tracks, the government told Rajya Sabha.
This was the highest ever loss in the past six years. According to railway ministry data, the loss of freight revenue for similar reason in 2015-16 was Rs 633 crore and in 2028-19 it was Rs 912 crore.
In another reply to a question, Union railway minister Piyush Goyal said there has been no passenger deaths due to a railway accident since March 23, 2019.
“For nearly 22 months, India has not had a single passenger killed due to train accidents,” he said.
The minister added that in the new restructured Railway Board, a designated director-general of safety has been appointed for the first time.
In response to another question, the ministry said 592 railway employees have lost their lives due to Covid-19. It said no employee has been sent on leave or not received salary since March 2020 due to the pandemic.
