NEW DELHI: A special Prevention of Money Laundering (Act) court on Tuesday cancelled all warrants issued against fugitive economic offender Nirav Modi‘s brother-in-law.
Mainak Mehta — a British national — is the husband of Nirav’s sister Purvi Mehta. Both of them had turned approver in the case and agreed to depose as prosecution witnesses.
Mehta appeared before a special PMLA court today morning regarding a money laundering case against Nirav Modi and others.
The court directed him to furnish a cash bond of Rs 50,000 as security and cancelled all warrants issued against him.
The court had issued non-bailable warrants against the couple in 2018. A red corner notice was also issued against Purvi by Interpol.
In February, the Mehtas had moved separate pleas for cancellation of the warrants.
In April, the court had said that the non-bailable warrants issued against the couple will be kept in abeyance till further orders.
They had made the plea a month after the same court permitted them to become approvers and depose as prosecution witnesses against Modi in the money laundering cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The court granted the couple pardon while allowing their separate applications to be declared approvers.
Nirav Modi is prime accused in the Punjab National Bank scam. Purvi was made an accused in the money laundering case filed by the ED.
The agency had alleged that several of Purvi’s attached properties were acquired or generated from proceeds of crime by Nirav in the name of his sister and several companies showed her as owner.
