NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday termed the ‘Make In India‘ initiative as very important for the expansion of metro services. While inaugurating India’s first-ever driverless train on Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line via video conferencing, PM Modi said that ‘Make in India’ reduces cost by saving foreign currency and providing more employment to Indian people.
The inauguration of the first driverless metro train shows how fast India is moving towards smart systems, the Prime Minister mentioned.
“By the year 2025, we are going to expand it to more than 25 cities. In 2014, only 248 km of metro lines were operational in the country. Today it is about three times more than seven hundred kilometres. By the year 2025, we are trying to expand it to 1,700 kilometres,” PM Modi said.
“These are not just figures, they are proof of Ease of Living coming in the lives of crores of Indians,” he added.
Also, the National Common Mobility Card, which will be fully operationalised on the Airport Express Line, will enable anyone carrying a RuPay-Debit Card issued from any part of the country to travel on the route using it.
This facility will become available on the entire Delhi Metro network by 2022, the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) said.
PM Modi further stated that the Centre has worked to unify services to help people; introduced measures like GST (goods and services tax), FAStag cards and one nation, one ration card.
