NEW DELHI: The income tax (I-T) department on Thursday extended the due date for filing income tax returns (ITR) for financial year 2020-21 till December 31.
The due date was earlier extended till September 31 for individuals and till November 30 for the companies, mainly in wake of the challenges faced by people due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a tweet, the tax department said: “On consideration of difficulties reported by the taxpayers in filing of ITRs & audit reports for AY 2021-22 under the IT Act, 1961, CBDT further extends the due dates for filing of ITRs & audit reports for AY 21-22.”

Ever since the launch of the new tax portal, users have been complaining of repeated technical glitches.
So far, nearly 1.2 crore returns for the last financial year have been filed, with over 76.2 lakh tax payers using the new portal’s online utility for the purpose, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said.
