NEW DELHI: The Karnataka high court on Friday quashed Uttar Pradesh Police‘s notice to Twitter India managing director Manish Maheshwari for his personal appearance in connection with a video of an alleged hate crime which went viral on social media in June.
The high court has allowed UP Police to record his statement via virtual mode or by visiting his office or home, news agency ANI reported.
Maheshwari had filed a plea challenging the notice filed under Section 41A of CrPC.
Earlier, on June 24, the court granted interim protection to Maheshwari, directing that no coercive action be taken against him.
The Twitter India MD had also informed the HC that he is ready to appear before the UP Police but only on the condition that he won’t be arrested.
The controversy relates to an assault on an elderly Muslim man in Loni, Ghaziabad, on June 5.
The UP Police then filed an FIR against nine entities, including Twitter, Twitter India, Congress leaders and journalists for wrongly giving a communal colour to the incident, without checking the facts.
