GAIL targets net zero status by 2040 - Times of India

NEW DELHI: State-run gas utility GAIL on Friday announced a target of achieving net zero emission from operations by 2040 by foraying into green hydrogen, renewables and biofuels but did not disclose proposed investments to achieve the goal.
“In line with India’s vision to achieve net zero by 2070, GAIL has completed a comprehensive study on science-based net zero ambition and intends to achieve 100% reduction in Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions and a 35% reduction in scope-3 emissions by 2040,” Jain said at the company’s annual meeting of shareholders.
GAIL’s core business is clean-burning natural gas, which gives it a smaller carbon footprint compared to oil refining or producing companies, even though it also operates a petrochemical plant.
The company is setting up a green hydrogen unit with a capacity of 4.3 tonnes per day using polymer electrolyte membrane technology at Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh. It is also setting up a 10 MW ground-mounted solar power project at Vijaipur and studying technical feasibility of hydrogen blending of natural gas for supplying through city gas networks. Initiatives are also being taken for starting compressed biogas supply, Jain told shareholders.
GAIL is well-placed to play an important role in promoting use of natural gas with an existing LNG (liquefied natural gas) portfolio of more than 14 million tonnes per annum, diversity in supply sources and price indices as well as a wide pipeline network, Jain said adding the gas portfolio was being expanded to meet rising demand.
